The object cell background is made of sandblasted stained glass, adding a touch of randomness to the interior images. The dry cell is filled with ampules and hand lampworked glass, creating an infinite number of colorful and random images. A tapered two-mirror system produces perfect 8-point images, further enhancing the visual experience.
Working in slumped glass, every part of this kaleidoscope is handmade by Charles using stained glass, mirrors and lead solder. The simple, yet elegant exterior form is tapered, and the two-mirror system is also slightly tapered. Charles considers this configuration to result in the best symmetry. Note the identifying five buttons on the exterior which land distinction to the piece, as well as allowing a secure grip of the kaleidoscope. His clever three pronged soldered “feet” at the base repeat the round five buttons on the exterior. The turning cell has a very interesting feature which results in a surprising beam of entering sparkle. Upon examination, the turning cell has been etched except for small openings of transparent glass which is responsible for the surprising sparkly beam of light. This round cell has been designed so that it clears the table, protecting it from unintended damage.
While the exterior of the kaleidoscope is striking, the inside if just a pure delight. You will see a lace-like image in the form of a mandala that is one of the most delicate of colorful images. The two-mirror configuration has been set to an even, precise eight point star. The occasionally brilliant sparkle of light completes a truly lovely image.
